Covid: Vietnam detects new UK-Indian variant, health officials say

코로나 : 베트남에서 영국-인도 변이바이러스 발견

 

Vietnam has detected a Covid variant that appears to be a combination of the Indian and UK variants and can spread quickly by air.

Variant(변이,변종) : something that is slightly different from the usual form of something

Ex) This game is a variant of netbull

 

Appear = seem (formal : appear)

Ex) The diamond appeared to be genuine / The research appears to show that drug is effecitve in most cases

* it appears that / there appear(s) to be something : 생각한 것이 사실이거나 이미 일어났을때

Ex) It appears that all the files have been deleted / Police have found what appear to be human reamains

 

Vietnam's Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long described the latest mutation on Saturday as "very dangerous"

Mutation : a change in the genetic structure of an animal or plant

 

Viruses mutate all the time and most variants are inconsequential, but some can make a virus more contagious.

Inconsequential : not important = insignificant

Contagious = infectious

Ex) The patient is still highly contagious

 

Since Covid-19 was first identified in January 2020, thousands of mutations have been deteced.

Identify : recognize and correctly name someone or something / discover exactly what it is

Ex) Eyewitnesses identified the gunman as an army segeant

     Scientists have identified the gene that causes abnormal growth

 

Vietnam has uncovered a new Covid-19 variant combining characteristics of the two existing variants first found in India and the UK, "Mr Nguyen told a government meeting, accroding to Reuters new agency.

Uncover = Find out, discover

Ex) Customs officials uncovered a plot to smuggle weapons into the country

plot : secret plan, smuggle into : to take something or someone illegally from one country to another

 

* Combining과 found는 a new Covid-19을 부연 설명하는 ing(능동)와 PP(수동)형태이다.

 

Mr Nguyen said the new hybrid variant was more transmissible than previously known versions, especially in the air. He said it was discovered after running tests on newly-detected patients, online newspaper VnExpress reported.

New hybrid variant : 앞서 이야기된 combining characteristics fo the two existing variants 대체어

 

Transmissible : to send or pass something from one person, place or thing to another

Ex) Mathemarical knowledge is transmitted from teacher to student

He added that the genetic code of the virus would available soon.

The variant of Covid-19 first identified in India last October - called B.1.617.2 - is more transmissible than the UK/Kent variant - also known as B.1.1.7- according to experts.

Resarch suggests that vaccines, such as the Pfizer and Astrazeneca jabs, are highly effective against the Indian variant after two doses, but protection from one dose appears to be reduced.

There is no evidence that any mutations of the coronavirus cause much more serious illness for the vast majority of people

 

As with the original version, the risk remains highest for people who are elderly or have significant underlying health conditions.

Vietnam has seen a spike in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks. The country has registered more than 6,700 coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic. Of those, more than half have been recorded since late April this year.

Spike : a sudden large increase in the number or rate of something

Ex) spike in interest rates

 

Of those는 앞 문장에서 언급한 "6,700 coronavirus cases 중에" 라는 뜻을 가진다.

 

It has also recorded 47 Covid-related deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
